What's your heritage, where are you originally from?

I was born in Breda, The Netherlands. My mom is Dutch & my dad is black Indian American (US) (tribe: Choctoy)
When I was a little kid, my mom used to cycle over the border with me on her back, we'd join my dad when he went to play music on the Meir in Antwerp. After a few years of this, my parents decided to move to a town closer to Antwerp, Belgium called Sint-niklaas. However, I'd consider Antwerp to be my hometown as this is where most of my childhood memories are.

"I felt like It was time to take control and stop being distracted or disbelieving in my own capabilities. (you are your own biggest critic)

Where are you based now and what's the story that brought you there?

I'm currently based in Berlin, I have been for a year now. About 1.5 years ago I was a huge mess & had a bad break up with my ex-boyfriend, whom I was living with at the time. I knew I was capable & gifted with so much more than I was doing with my life. I felt like It was time to take control and stop being distracted or disbelieving in my own capabilities. (you are your own biggest critic).
A very dear friend of mine suggested I go to Berlin. It was new ground and he thought I’d fit in very well. Honestly, before this conversation it had never crossed my mind to come to Berlin. I had absolutely no ties to the city or any idea what it was like. As impulsive as I am, I decided not to go straight away and stayed in Brussels where I had found my own apartment instead. I needed balance & a safe place to call home that no one could take away from me.

However, I quickly realised that staying In the city that broke me might not be the best place to heal. So I started thinking about Berlin again. 2 weeks later, I was working as a hostess on a tec-convention & met two guys from berlin. We went for drinks after and I remember joking about how funny it would be if I actually moved to berlin now. Two weeks later there I was.. Living in berlin :)Zinkir Choker - Kirea Earcuff in silver

What does dinner at your house looks like?

If friends are coming over, then it would be a fun group together with many different dishes on the table, music, candles and interesting conversations, often leading in to laughter; and last but not least dancing!! If it's just me, it would be a home cooked meal, music and a candle.

Best recommendations for your city? Favourite dinner/brunch/cocktails/secret locations

As everything has been closed during most of my time in Berlin, I haven't got to explore that much, but I do always love me a good poke bowl & I'd say my favourite cocktail place with the best memories is Odessa bar. The first time I went there was the day I quite my regular job and decided not to go back to anything I didn’t truly love. Now surrounded by amazing company, I’m confident in saying this changed my life forever.

What are your life essentials? — What do you carry with you all the time?

To be honest i’m not really attached to anything, but if I had to say something, I'd say my phone, keys and bank card.

Who was your most previous text/call to and what about?

It was with my dad, he was making sure I got back to Berlin alright.

Tell us your daily rituals: weekday vs weekend.

When I wake up I usually do my skincare, make my tea, do my yoga, reflect on how I want to become better today and get ready. To be honest, I don't have much of a routine regularly because every day is different. Some days I travel, some days I meet friends or take long walks, some days I’m at home working for the magazine, or doing productions I’m coordinating. Truly, no day is ever like the other and I think that’s what I’m most grateful for; to be able to do everything I love and never get bored. I don't really have weeks and weekends. It's more just day after day after day.

What's your plan for today, this week and this year?

Today is a self care day, so I'll be taking extra care of myself physically and emotionally. This week I have several projects to finish planning, so I´ll be at home a lot, doing a lot of thinking and plotting.
This year I don't have much of a plan, but I'd love to travel more, develop my creative side, explore my talents and really become the best version of me. I think last year has taught us that making a concrete plan doesn’t work, so I prefer setting intentions rather than making plans.

Most influential person in your life?

I honestly can’t choose. Theres many people that influence and inspire my life. I believe everyone I have real conversations with influence me in some way or another, so I’m super grateful for that.

Tried and true methods against creative block?

I don't force it, I just put that project aside for a sec. I believe the best way to get inspired is by going outside and having conversations, sharing ideas with someone usually provides answers for me. Also, when walking I'm inspired by the forms, movement and colours I see, so this helps a lot too. Another trick is getting out of my comfort zone, I'm less creative when I’m comfortable, so whenever I feel myself getting too settled in a place, I usually switch situations or city.

Biggest inspiration: in terms of design, art, music, sites that you find yourself revisiting often?

Again, people. I get very inspired by conversations. I know its odd, but I'm truly inspired by humanity and it's different ways of thinking and talking. Besides conversations, I'm hugely inspired by spoken poetry & stories. If the music has a good storyline, I´ll be 75% more interested than if it were just a good beat and no content. Also, as already mentioned, surroundings. I love to switch cities and explore new places. That’s where my biggest inspirations come from.
